Two Waterfronts, One Corrosion Problem

West Bradenton has water on two sides — Palma Sola Bay to the west and the Manatee River to the north. Homes range from 1960s and ’70s ranches to newer waterfront rebuilds, and many sit on canals or a few blocks from open water. Onshore breezes leave a fine salt film on anything outdoors, and an AC condenser, pulling air through thousands of thin aluminum fins, collects more than its share.

The damage is gradual. Fins turn white and powdery, then crumble at a touch. Copper-to-aluminum joints corrode and begin weeping refrigerant. Cabinet screws rust out and the terminals in the control panel oxidize.
